How to Import a Used Car from Japan: Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Complete step-by-step guide to importing a used car from Japan. Learn how to select, pay, ship, and receive your vehicle. Everything you need to know about the import process.

Importing a used car from Japan may seem daunting, but with the right exporter, the process is straightforward and rewarding. This complete guide walks you through every step, from selecting your vehicle to receiving it at your local port.

Step 1: Research and Select Your Vehicle

Start by browsing our stock inventory or letting us know your specific requirements. Consider factors like make, model, year, mileage, budget, and your country's import regulations. Some countries have age limits on imported vehicles, so check your local regulations first.

Step 2: Get a Quote

Once you have identified a vehicle, request a quote. We provide FOB (Free on Board) pricing in USD, which covers the vehicle cost and all export processing in Japan. You can also request a CIF quote that includes shipping and insurance to your destination port.

Step 3: Make Payment

After agreeing on the price, you will receive a proforma invoice with our bank details. We accept bank transfer (USD or JPY) and card payments via Stripe. Once payment is confirmed, we begin the export process and reserve the vehicle in your name.

Step 4: Vehicle Preparation and Documentation

We handle all Japanese-side documentation including the export certificate, de-registration papers, and auction sheets. The vehicle is prepared for shipping, including cleaning and any required modifications. All documents are sent to you electronically for your records.

Step 5: Shipping

Your vehicle is shipped via RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) or container vessel, depending on your preference and the destination. We provide the Bill of Lading and all shipping documents. Transit times vary by destination, typically 10–40 days.

Step 6: Customs Clearance and Registration

Upon arrival at your destination port, you or your customs agent will clear the vehicle through customs. Import duties and taxes are payable at this stage. After clearance, you can register the vehicle with your local transport authority. We provide all documentation needed for this process.

Tips for a Smooth Import

Always check your country's import regulations before purchasing. Work with a reputable exporter like HR Trading who provides full documentation. Consider purchasing marine insurance for your vehicle during transit. And if you are new to importing, consider using a local customs agent to help with the clearance process.
