Japanese Used Cars to Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe is right-hand drive, which makes Japanese domestic stock a natural fit. Vehicles arrive by RoRo at Durban and then travel by road through Beitbridge to Harare, Bulawayo and Mutare. HR Trading sources the double-cabs and 4x4s Zimbabwean buyers prefer and gives you the documentation ZIMRA and the import permit process require.

How an Import to Zimbabwe Works
- 1
Apply for the import permit through Zimbabwe's Ministry of Industry and Commerce (IDG) — this must be in hand before the vehicle is shipped.
- 2
Choose the vehicle and confirm it is right-hand drive with the auction sheet translated.
- 3
We complete the Japanese export documentation and book the pre-export inspection.
- 4
The car ships RoRo to Durban and is entered in transit for Zimbabwe under bond.
- 5
It travels by road through Beitbridge, where ZIMRA assesses duty, surtax, VAT and carbon tax before release.
The Import Permit Comes First
Zimbabwe requires an import permit for used vehicles, issued through the Ministry of Industry and Commerce under the Import and Export Control framework. Because the permit names the vehicle and its chassis number, the sequence matters: obtain the permit, then ship. HR Trading holds the vehicle while you complete the permit and issues the export documents in exactly the details your permit shows, so the two always match at the border.
Routing via Durban and Beitbridge
RoRo from Japan to Durban takes roughly 30 to 40 days, and the road leg from Durban through Beitbridge to Harare adds several days depending on the border queue. We show Zimbabwe as the final destination on the shipping documents so the vehicle is cleared in transit in South Africa rather than imported there, and we supply the transit papers your clearing agent uses at Beitbridge.
ZIMRA Duty, Surtax and Carbon Tax
The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority assesses duty on the assessed value, adds surtax and 15% VAT, and applies a carbon tax that rises with engine capacity and vehicle age. Zimbabwe's duty bands favour smaller-capacity and newer vehicles, so a tidy low-mileage unit often lands for less than a cheaper larger-engined car. Ask us for an estimate of the ZIMRA figure and we will set it out line by line.
Models Zimbabwean Buyers Want
Farm, mine and construction work shapes the Zimbabwean market. The Toyota HiLux and Isuzu D-Max are the most requested double-cabs, the Toyota Land Cruiser and Fortuner cover heavy-duty and family 4x4 use, and the Nissan Hardbody and Mazda BT-50 fill the mid-range. Toyota Corollas and HiAce vans remain popular for everyday and passenger transport.
